Medical Board Makes More Progress on Clearing Caseload

Scottsdale, Ariz. - The Executive Director of the Arizona Medical Board told Board members at their meeting in Scottsdale today (February 8, 2006) that the number of cases under investigation has dropped to its lowest level since his arrival in December 2004.

In his report to the Board, Timothy C. Miller said there are 756 open investigations nearly 600 fewer than a year ago at this time. And all but 11, or 98%, involve complaints filed in 2005 and 2006. “The staff has really done a tremendous job,” Mr. Miller said. The 180-day goal to complete investigations remains elusive, but Mr. Miller expects the agency to bring the current 212 day average down as older cases are finished.

During its meeting today, the Board revoked the licenses of two physicians John C. Woods, M.D., a Pinetop psychiatrist, and Tammy Tadom, M.D., board-certified in Emergency Medicine, who had last practiced in Kayenta, Arizona. The Office of Administrative Hearings had recommended revocation after formal hearings on both physicians.

The Board also conducted five formal interviews with physicians today. In one case, the Board voted to issue a Decree of Censure and to place Ronald S. Sherer, M.D., on probation for 15-years for mismanagement of a pregnant patient that resulted in the death of a fetus. During that probationary period, the Phoenix OB/GYN would be restricted from practicing obstetrics.
