Revised Draft of Pain Guidelines Available

Scottsdale, Ariz. - The Arizona Medical Board has posted a revision of the Draft Pain Management Guidelines on its web site. On Thursday, March 16th from 2pm to 4pm, the Board will hold a Public Forum on the guidelines at its headquarters.

The Board recognizes that controlled substances including opioid analgesics may be essential in the treatment of chronic pain, whether due to cancer or non-cancer origins. The purpose of the proposed guidelines is to create an environment in which physicians are encouraged to administer controlled substances in the course of treating chronic pain without fear of disciplinary action from this Board when such treatment is provided within the accepted community standard of care.

At the Forum, Board Staff will outline the proposed changes to the Arizona guidelines and answer any questions. The Board is also seeking input on the guidelines from members of the health care community. A copy of the draft guidelines is posted on the Arizona Medical Board Web Site.

The Public Forum will be held in the Arizona Medical Board meeting room at 9535 East Doubletree Ranch Road in Scottsdale. If you are unable to attend the Public Forum, please email your suggestions to Dr. Carol Peairs at [email protected].
